Club de Golf Valderrama is located in Andalucia, the largest and southern-most region of Spain. A few miles north of Gibraltar, it is approximately two hours' drive from Cádiz and one and a half hours from Málaga.

Recognised as the number 1 golf course in Europe, the Valderrama hosted the Ryder Cup in 1997, the first tome outside the British Isles and Ireland. The fairways have been described by top pros and leading golf writers as the best in Europe, if not the best in the world. It is not an easy course - nor was it intended to be. It is designed so as to call forth thought and precision for every shot.

Valderrama is a 6356 metres par 71 golf course, with no hole of less than championship quality although it can be fully enjoyed by players of all handicaps. The Valderama course was designed in 1974 by Robert Trent Jones, Sr, one of the great golf course architects, and was originally known as Sotogrande New. In 1981 its name was changed to Las Aves.Its incarnation in its present form began in 1984, when Jaime Ortiz-Patiño was able to acquire it from the developers who a few years earlier had laid out the very extensive Sotogrande area so imaginatively and tastefully. Ortiz-Patiño had been one of the first to build a house, and for some years he had nursed the secret ambition to bring Las Aves to a greater potential.

Valderrama Golf has two prevailing winds: the poniente from the land, which in summer can be very hot, and the levante from the Mediterranean, which brings a cooler sea breeze. The changed conditions, depending on which one is blowing, add variety to a golf course that is already rich in shot values.

The recent rebuilding and redecoration of the Valderrama Clubhouse was completed and ready to show off to members and visitors at the Volvo Masters Andalucía in November 2002. The difference is quite astounding. From understated elegance the Clubhouse has been transformed into an even greater understatement of the same.
